How do I backup files on my Mac?

I have just moved to a macbook pro (I will never go back to a windows) and I have my old External HDD.

I would like to create a backup system in which every week or so, all my files (music, work, etc) get automatically backed up to my HDD. I could do this easily on my old windows PC, but on my mac, the only way I can seem to do it is by manually dragging my sh*t over to the HDD!

There has got to be an easy way, like windows does (where its done every week or so), or like the Apple TimePortal/machine whatever it is (but its way too expensive)???

Please help?

Okay here is what you do

    Plug in the external HDD

Click on the Time Machine icon on the Dock it looks like a circle with green and a clock inside of it.

Click on "Set Up Time Machine" when a window pops up that says "A storage device for Time Machine isn't set up."

Click "On" or "Choose Backup Disk"; either one will work.

Select the Hard Drive you want Time Machine to use and click "Use for Backup."

Time Machine will back up automatically in just a few minutes. Once Time Machine has performed its backup routine, when you click on Time Machine in the doc again, you'll be able to navigate through your backed-up files.

in line with danger you could attempt the Apple's AirPort time pill. It has quite some area to apply and different great advantageous properties yet you elect yet another Mac to apply it. once you're going with a computer, then attempt some thing like SkyDrive or yet another cloud-based provider.
