Should I see about having my child skip a grade?

My son is currently in the 3rd grade. He has made straight A's since starting school. Last year he wasn't being challenged and the teacher assignment him extra work. This year seems to be the same problem. The class hasn't yet to begin multiplication and my son is already working on it along with division. My son says he is bored and not being challenged. My son used to be so excited to go to school and now he isn't. Have any parents go through this before? What would be the best way to approach him getting tested?

Just go to the school and request it. If he's ready he's ready. If not no harm done. You want him to keep liking school and not to get bored. He has way too many years left to be bored now.

Your son is far too young to be feeling that way. usually this experience appears when kids are mid-middle/ Jr high school. But, I love his enthusiasm.

The school should provide a standard test. If I'm right, it should be administered to him through his teachers, not his parents.

When I were younger, I had also excelled. My teachers had given me a test, and after I passed, I was allowed to skip 2nd grade and go into 3rd. It was weird, but I eventually learned why I never attended 2nd grade. However, I don't know if they still do this in the U.S. Education has been more tough to achieve these days.

I was the same way and my mom did put me in a higher grade. I suggest a yes because it was better and less boring; however, if your son isn't very social I don't recommend it that much.

Does your school have advanced classes so he could go to those classes but yet stay in the same grade with his friends? Maybe like an advanced math class, and he could go to art or music or social studies with the rest of the class? I took advance English and Science in grade school and it was so much fun!

From being that kid who was a year younger than the others, I would try the extra work line in the first instance. I used to think it was okay, but looking back, I think it is better to be with the kids who are your own age. That is just my opinion though. Good luck.

I was the same way; they wanted to put me up a few grades from reception. I wouldn't recommend it, he needs to be with children his own age, 1 grade may not be to bad but look at those children and see if he is up with them socially as well. Being the youngest in the grade and not being able to relate with your peers in class won't be good for him at all. If you think he isn't quite up to the next grade socially have them bring him work down from whatever grade work he needs.

well in some school they have a.p classes where the students take 4th grade work if they are in the 3rd grade. I think skipping a grade is a bad idea because the every think he would have to wait a year like driving a stuff like that but that is just my point of view.

I skipped third grade... it's cool. It'll be easier for him to skip it now then later in life because he can easily make more new friends at this age.

Source(s): I was reading in kindergarten, some kids didn't even know the alphabet, my mom put me in the gifted program and I ended up skipping a grade too.
