Boston October Weather sees a average drop of approximately 10°F in temperature from the start of the month to the end, with average daily highs below 70 in the beginning of October and below 60 at the end of the month. Bring at least a light jacket with you if you are visiting Boston in October.
If you want to swim you should book a hotel with an indoor swimming pool. Other outdoor fun is still possible, and can be quite pleasant at times. Rain is always possible, with longer, less violent rainstorms replacing thunderstorms as the norm.

In fact the earliest snowfall recorded in Boston was on October 10! But that was a (so far) extreme rarity. A much greater chance of being hit by the fringes of a tropical hurricane.
However, in general the first part of October is usually the nicest part of the year -- 60s and 70s, and sunnier than is typical for the rest of the year..
If you are from a part of the world (which means 98% of it) that does not experience gorgeous Fall foliage make sure that you rent a car and squeeze in a day to see it. About October 8 it is at peak color in northern New Hampshire and Vermont -- about a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive (if this is difficult to fit in consider extending your trip for a couple of days to see it and with a bit shorter drive).

John's answer is correct.
You make get a freak snow event. Or it might be in the 80s.
Just pack simple. Pants, tshirts. Sweater. Heavier jacket (that is, if it were 45, would you be freezing, or are you used to that?). Obviously, everywhere has heating and air conditioning once you're inside.
It does rain frequently year round, but it also gets windy, so an umbrella might become sueless very fast.
Take good shoes, theres a lot of walking to do.

Pack long pants, short-sleeve shirts, a couple sweaters, and a jacket.
Tons of sweaters would probably not be necessary.
Today it was in the 70s. The rest ofthe week should be in the 60s. I doubt it will get THAT much cooler in two weeks.
Go to www.weather.com a few days before your trip, and type in "Boston, MA".

October is a difficult month to predict. October is highly variable in New England. I would pack a variety of clothes: jeans, T shirts, shoes, sweaters, and a jacket. I don't think a peacoat will be necessary.

As the old joke goes, if you don't like Boston weather, wait a minute. It might be warm and sunny in the 70s, or it might be rainy in the 30s, and over the course of a week it might well be both.
Bring stuff you can wear in layers so you can adjust as needed.

it'll be a tit bit nipply out. It's probably going to rain. P.S. don't be an uppity prick about the "perfect weather" back home when you're out here. It won't get you very far.

i admire huge apple city Oh yeah, huge apple city i admire huge apple city Oh yeah, huge apple city Haha, onto the climate. this is meant to be somewhat cloudy yet no longer too undesirable, i might say a mild jacket is positive.
