Safe for young female to travel alone in Mexico City? Tips?
I want to go to Mexico City in December to see a Rammstein concert (it is annoying--they don't come to the States anymore). I know TJ and what-not is off-limits but what about MC? Is that fairly safe? I know the whole "don't look like a clueless tourist" thing probably applies--I have traveled to Vietnam w/ my mom. I have never been to Mexico at all. I assume that the country-side and beach towns are safe, but I don't know about the city.
I'm 23, btw, and 1/2 Viet, 1/2 White--if that makes any difference. I'd probably stand out--don't know if I would be pegged as an American though... I also come from a very boring and safe suburb of LA County--Torrance--so safe you can walk around alone at 2 am without being scared. I'm pretty sure that's out of the question for any big city (when I went to NYC alone, everyone told me to go back to my hotel at 10). Any neighborhoods I should avoid? Rammstein will be playing at the Palacio de los Deportes.
Also, I took French in HS and Viet in college so I don't speak Spanish. I did, however, take linguistics so I can probably learn some phrases pretty quickly and with minimal accent.
Sooo... should I go or no? I can't travel with anyone and I don't have a significant other. I'm the only person I know that likes metal (:P). Tips if I do go?
My Taiwanese-Chilean friend says the American media is very sensationalist and is exaggerating the dangers.

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) could be the capital of Mexico and an unbelievable city surrounded by mighty mountain ranges. To see that town you are able to select the very best solution hotelbye . The city's place is unquestionably breathtaking. Two spectacular snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower above it using their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also keeps countless pointers of its past and these are issues that entice the tourists. The defeating center of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where in fact the country's first constitution was proclaimed in 1813 and now is one of the very visited place of Mexico City since it's one of many world's biggest squares. In Mexico City you may also visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

It is absolutely NEVER the best solution to travel alone to Mexico. I am married to a Mexican and live on the Texas-Mexico border. We travel frequently into Mexico. Yes, violence and problems can be exaggerated but in the case of Mexico, it is not wise to travel unaccompanied.
Kidnappings DO happen. I don't think you'll get shot by any drug cartel but there are many violent crimes against women.

It is, as long as you travel with a reliable travel agency. If not, you might end up in the bad areas and you're an easy target because you're ethnicity reveals that you are a tourist. Avoid Tepito and most of the suburbs. Stay in the Downtown Area.

Hey, you are 23 & won't stand out like a Gringo would in Mex. Just have a good time & brush up on your Spanish in the meantime.
Be sure to get a Hostel or hotel close to the gig. Have a blast.
