If you mean the Production Center he was tappin on it was a MPC 2000xl....a Drum Sampler.....
I have one...its nice...a little dated but with a decent interface that has stereo input you can manage pretty damn well....

It was an MPC, an instrument that hip-hop producers use to create beats. I don't know the specific type he was using, but here's an example of one: http://www.soundcrafting.com/mpc2500_sounds.php
