The concept here is addition and subtraction of fractions. When you do any operation with fractions the DENOMINATORS MUST BE THE SAME. Denominators are the numbers under the / sign.
1. Apple pie 2 1/4
Cherry pie 1 1/2
You can see that there is more apple pie left than cherry pie.
So how much more apple pie is the difference between the two #s (that is, subtract cherry pie from apple pie)
BUT the apple pie is cut in fourths; and the cherry pie is cut in halves. EVERYTHING MUST BE CUT--in this case--in FOURTHS
So: (reset the question):
2 1/4 = 2 1/4
l 1/2 = 1 2/4 Now you have all pies in FOURTHS
HOLD UP: remember this is a subtraction question? Now, you can not take 2/4 from 1/4 SO:
2 1/4 = (2*4 +l) = 9/4 (apple pie)
l 2/4 = (l*4 +2) = 6/4 (cherry pie) You've created improper fractions in this step.
Now you can subtract 6 from 9:
Do the math: 9-6 =3 EVERYTHING IS STILL /4
So: 3/4
The bakery has 3/4 more of the apple pie more left at day's end than cherry pie.
2. Large nails sold 6 3/8 = 6 x/40 = 6 15/40
Small nails sold 7 2/5 = 7 x/40 = 7 16/40
All fractions MUST HAVE THE SAME DENOMINATOR--if you are not aware of any smaller common ones you can be sure that the # you get when you multiply the denominators together will
work.
So: 8*5 = 40 in this question.
To determine equivalents cross multiply: 3/8 = x/40 (for large nails);
8x = l20 (divide by 2)
4x= 60 (divide by 4)
x = l5
AND
2/5 = x/40 (for small nails)
5x = 80 (divide by 5)
x = l6
Now all you have to do to get the total # of boxes sold is add the two together:
Large nails 6 15/40
Small nails 7 16/40
Total boxes l3 31/40 sold.
3. Here you need to discover how many total hours is spent studying. Follow second example.
Determine common denominator
Determine equivalent fractions
Total # of hours
Reduce answer to lowest terms (if necessary).
Try this one yourself.

First you need to convert the mixed fraction to improper fraction. To do that,
step 1: multiply the denominator with the whole number
step 2: add that to the numerator
step 3: replace the numerator with that number
Question 1:
So you have 2 and 1/4 apple pies.
step 1: 2 times 4 is 8
step 2: 8 plus 1 is 9
step 3: 9/4
So 2 and 1/4 is the same thing as 9/4
Next you have 1 and 1/2 cherry pies
step 1: 1 times 2 is 2
step 2: 2 plus 1 is 3
step 3: 3/2
So 1 and 1/2 is the same as 3/2
You have 9/4 apple pies, and 3/2 cherry pies
"How much more" means to subtract
9/4 - 3/2
Least common denominator is 4, so multiply top and bottom of 3/2 by 2, you will get 6/4
9/4 - 6/4 = 3/4
You have 3/4 more apple pie than cherry pie.
Question 2:
Same thing. You will have 51/8 large nails and 37/5 small nails.
"In total" means add them together
lease common denominator is 40
You will get 551/40
To change this to a mixed fraction, divide 551 by 40.
You will get 13 Remainder 31. 13 is the whole number, and 31 is the numerator.
So your answer in mixed fraction form is 13 and 31/40
Question 3:
Same thing. See if you can do this on your own. Add them together
