    Fractions and common denominators

    Kwan

    5 = 5x3/3 = 15/3

    15/3 + 2/3 = 17/3

    Multiply both by 4 to get the fraction over 12 = 17x4/3x4 = 68/12

    Mary

    4 = 2x12/12 = 48/12

    48/12 + 11/12= 59/12

    Compare the two fractions. Kwan is taller by 3/4 of a foot.

    Others are the same.

    Kwan is 9 inches taller, if I'm reading this right. The way I see it is Mary is 4 ft and 11 inches tall. So you would take Kwan's height 2/3 and times it by 4 so there is a common denominator. So then he would be 5 ft and 8 inches tall. then convert that into inches. 5ft 8 inches = 68 inches. 4ft 11 inches = 59 inches. 68-59= 9 inches.

    Jim practiced 3 hours and 16 minutes (I think) Idrk with this one.....but I also gave these fractions a common denominator which I'm pretty sure can only be 56. So on monday that turns into 1 and 7/56 hr and tues turns into 2 and 24/56 hrs. So the total is 3 and 25/56 hrs. He practiced for 1and 17/ 56 hrs more on tuesday.

    The second fish weighed 2 and 11/24 lbs. I once again, made the fractions have a common denominator which would be 24. So 4 and 1/6 lbs becomes 4 and 4/24 lbs. And 6 and 5/8 lbs becomes 6 and 15/24 lbs. Then you take 6 and 15/24 - 4 and 4/24= 2 and 11/24 lbs.

    And, again, I'm not really sure about that one...be a little while since I've done it. But, I'm pretty confident about the first one. You might want to check it though....the answers were always in the back of the books I had at my school.

    Hope I helped!

    well if ur comparing fractions:

    2/3

    11/12

    u need to have the same denominator (bottom number). In this case, u can multiply so that 3 turns into 12 by multiplying by 4. U do the same to the numerator. so:

    8/12

    11/12

    now u know the fractions, do rest by urself.

    Next,

    1/8

    3/7

    To do this the easy way, mulitplt 7 times 8. That will be ur denominator for both. Since u multiply 8 times 7 and 7 times 8, do same to EACH numerator.

    7/56

    24/56.

    Now figure out the rest this way. Remember, when u multiply one numerator/denominator, u do the same to the other.
