    Isolate the terms with the x's so they are both on the same side of the equation and move the values without the x to the other side.

    14x - 12x = 8 + 31

    Done by subtracting 12x from the right side so 12x - 12x = 0 and subtracting 12x from the left side so that you have 14x - 12x. In a similar fashion, I added 31 to both sides so it zeroes out on the left and on the right you have 8 + 31.

    Then combine like terms.

    14x - 12x = 2x and 8 + 31 =39

    So the equation becomes 2x = 39

    Then divide both sides by 2 to isolate the x.

    x = 39/2 = 19.5

    14x - 31 = 12x + 8

    -Subtract 12x from both sides

    2x - 31 = 8

    -Add 31 to both sides

    2x = 39

    -Divide each side by 2

    x = 19.5

    And your answer is 19.5

    You first need to isolate x

    14x = 12x + 39 (add 32 to both sides)

    2x = 39 (subtract 12x to both sides)

    x = (39/2) = 19.5 (divide both sides by 2)

    14x - 31= 12x + 8

    14x (-12x) - 31 = 12x (-12x) + 8

    2x - 31 (+31) = 8 (+31)

    2x = 39

    x = 39/2

    x = 19.5
