water heater wont stay on?

took a shower noticed the water not hot, I went to relight pilot after several tries, got it to flame, after a few mins it burns out., not heating the water. what am i looking at here? I'm unemployed and buying a new one is not possible. What's my best option ? Could it be that the regulator/thermostat is fauly and just needs replacing if possible? do I call my gas company? side note: my central heating is getting gas, so supply isn't an issue.

If you are getting the pilot to relight but it is not staying on after you release the gas valve button there is a problem with the thermocouple, this is a device that keeps the pilot present it does this by creating a small magnetic current to keep the solenoid energised which in turn keeps the pilot lit if the thermocouple is faulty there is no magnetic field created hence the pilot will not stay alight!!

a very simple job for a gas engineer to replace.

Maybe the pilot needs to be replaced or filter change, same things been happening to me. Landlord sent a repair man in to fix it and it has not given me any problems since.
