Do you think it is "Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all"?
From Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem In Memoriam:27, 1850:
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
I mean the heartache, the pain, the suffering that follows - is it worth it? All you have left are memories of happier times that just highlight the void.

Tennyson must have gone through some loss to have written that one... I remember studying his poetry in secondary school. I like the 'darkness' of his poetry.

Love....if only i had a penny for every different interpretation & quote i hear, about it, from people.
Yes...I think it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
But let me ask you something if you don't mind. Love in it's actuality is meant to be true and free from jealousy, hatred, enmity and envy right!?! I mean for it to constitute as real love right!?!....
So my question is...if for example the love you're referring to is the 'love' between spouses and their marriage ends as a result of irreconcilable differences (whatever they may be)..was the 'love' ever true in it's definitive form???
Cuz i believe if it is true and unconditional 'love' then it's nigh on impossible to lose the person & hate them etc. For that 'love' to no longer be there, means it was never real. So one should then question whether they even loved truly at all before they lost their significant other, so to speak.
I know i may have deviated a little from your question..sorry. But it's a topic that has the ability to create endless discussions & debates, in my opinion anyway.

My greatest lost that i have experienced is the lost of my beloved Holy Prophet of God, The Truthful One... Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah (saw) Yes everyday i felt that heartache, that pain, that suffering...... and to say if it is worth it is an understatement! How i miss my beloved Holy Prophet!
But i will remained patient and steadfast in awaiting the last decendant of our beloved Holy Prophet (saw) and that is al Imam al Mahdi (af) as requested by our beloved Prophet (saw):
" And i have not ask (ummah) except the love of my near kins (Ahlul Bayt)"
May his appearance, The Imam of Time, Imam al Mahdi (af) will heal this empty heart of mine and to love him (af) as i have loved my beloved Holy Prophet (saw)... JazakAllah
ps- a belated Eidul Fitri greetings...Eidul Mubarak!

Feeling the pain of love makes us realize that we are alive. :-) And it also readies us for the next greater person in our life. Insha'Allah.
I'm an English major, and I love that poem so much. :-) It's good to love. We are human. I'm a love machine. lol! :-D
Salaams.

I agree with that. It's like when you have a pet that you loved a lot, and it dies. You still loved having it, and you can remember all the happy times.
If you didn't, you'd be left wondering what it was like.

Lord Tennyson is correct.....you will always regret not having lived the moments in life.... because you will always be haunted by the mysteries they leave.....
