What is the difference between a manual and an automatic transmission?

I don't mean driving wise I mean the parts that make up the transmission. I hurd that automatics have more parts than manuals. But since I only own manual cars I don't know what an automatic engine looks like. I know they have a torque converter but what other parts do they have that you can't find in manuals?

valve bodies, clutches... While a manual has a clutch, it is outside of the transmission. In an automatic, it is inside. Automatics are very complicated, especially on newer designs. Manuals are essentially gears, and levers to move some gears to other gears. There are other parts involved, but when compared to automatics, it seems they are just that simple.

Manual saves gasoline, but the clutch will cost you about $800 if it gets ground up.
