When politicians use smear campaigns that are blatant lies can they be sued for slander?

If they can then why doesn't it happen? Is there a mutual agreement between politicians not to sue?

When the subject of the defamatory language is a political figure, then the standard of proof is much higher, and the plaintiff must show malice; That is, it must be proven that the party making the defamatory communication did so with a complete disregard for the facts. A political organization that engineers a smear campaign can easily make the defense that they have some factual basis for making these claims, even if they were mistaken.

It's harder to bring defamation claims when the person being allegedly defamed is a public figure. That being said, I'm sure there are probably still lawsuits.

Anyone can bring suit, but it is seldom done, the tabloids thrive only because any publicity of celebrities usually gets them more fame.
