Do I Have Dual Citizenship?

I'm applying to colleges and I am unsure of whether I am a US citizen or a US Dual Citizen. My parents are from Jamaica (although my mother is now a naturalized US citizen). What am I considered?

Update:

Yes! Sorry I left that out. I was born in the US.

Update 2:

@Docar No, I have not. Thank you!

You were born in the United States--you are nothing but an American citizen. Apply for a US passport.

If either one of your parents were born in Jamaica and you were born after 8/1962--your parents should of registered you with the Consulate/Embassy in Jamaica, if they have not--ask them to do so .Then you will have dual citizenship, carry 2 passports.

The US accepts dual citizenship--they do not like it, but you no longer have to renounce, which means your Mom should also carry both passports.

Understand this, as a matter of policy, the US does not recognize dual citizenship, even though it exists. So if you have US citizenship, you are a US citizen, nothing else.

How do you find out if you are a US citizen?

    1) You have a US birth certificate (if you were born in the US)

    2) You have a Certificate of Citizenship (if you have been naturalized)

    3) You have a US passport, or can apply for one.

If you are not a US citizen, you should have a Green Card. If you are not a US citizen and do not have a Green Card, you are in trouble and college is not even remotely on your "to do" list, as you would have to state your status. Claiming to be a US citizen when one is not carries a lifetime ban from the United States.

Addendum: if you were born in the US, you are a US citizen. Get your birth certificate and apply for a passport.

Are you registered with the Jamaican consulate?

A person born outside of Jamaica after August 5, 1962 is ENTITLED to Jamaican citizenship if his father or mother was born in Jamaica. (section 6 of the Jamaican Constitution.)
