1985 Dodge 318 V-8 Ignition?

In the distributor there is a part called a reluctor. It is loose on the distributor shaft. It has two slots that look like a place for a key or lock to hold the reluctor in place on the shaft. Is this held secure and if so how.

its not supposed to be loose except for the amount of play for the vacuum advance unit to work on it, up and down movement isn't suppose to be their at all,it should have a roll pin holding it in place,if its gone it will move up and down and cause the truck not to run right or not start at all,it will also chew up the pick up wheel on it,good luck

You need to have the small roll pin in place to lock the reluctor to shaft. The reluctor should lock pretty snug on shaft, if not, it may be time for a new distributor.

It can't go anywhere with the distributor cap on. Did you put the rotor in your pocket and forget? Put the rotor back on the shaft.
