Hard water stains, mineral deposits, and soap scum can be removed with CLR Bathroom & Kitchen Cleaner. I have used this product in my shower as well as to remove mineral deposits from an aquarium that was used for salt water fish. It ate through the mineral deposits very easily. Many hardware and home improvement stores carry this product. If you are interested in further information i have posted the web address for the product website below.

I've tried CLR it doesn't work. But I found this new stuff on line and it works great on any hard water or even rust stains. It's called Power One. http://www.atinsco.com/ it started out as a boat hull cleaning product but they are now selling it as a household cleaner

Ammonia is what I use to prepare the tub surface for new caulk. It removes all residuals. However, the smell is overpowering. Dilute it and apply through a spray bottle or just add a little to your windex to boost its power. Windex may be strong enough anyway if your surface is only moderately stubborn.
