How do I get from Columbus, OH to Washington DC?
I'm looking for a cheap way to get there and back, in October.

Nobody has mentioned Craigslist or college ride boards. You may find somebody who wants to share a ride that way.
I suppose that flapping your arms and flying is totally out of the question.
I wouldn't advise hitchhiking. It's probably not as safe as it used to be, and if you don't have experience, you can get stranded or caught in bad weather, not to mention getting arrested.
Let me see if Megabus goes there.
Megabus is the best bus system; it's cheap, clean and well-run. Unfortunately you can get from Washington to Philadelphia, and from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, but not from Columbus to Pittsburgh.

Fly on Southwest Airlines, and book immediately. Fares start to go up rapidly when you get within 30 days of the flight. You can fly from Columbus to Baltimore-Washington airport for as low as $59. The Baltimore-Washington airport is a ways out of DC (45 minutes or so), but there are trains and buses that will get you there pretty cheaply.
Note that if you fly from Columbus to Washington Dulles airport, the fares are *much* higher, and you may have to backtrack by flying to Chicago first. And Dulles is probably 30 minutes out of town anyway, so it isn't even much of a savings in ground travel.
Good luck, and welcome to Washington!

Need more information to help you decide, but in order of cost:
Walk. Hitchhike. Bus. Drive. Fly.
