When changing a water pump on a 1999 Dodge Gran Caravan what all do you have to remove or change?

Are there any special tools needed for the job and do you really have to change the timing belt when you do this? I just want to make sure we have all the tools and what is needed when doing this or is it better to have someone do it for us?

Update:

Walt it's a 3.3 L engine. I just wanted to ask so that I know and so I can decide if I should pay someone to do it instead of letting my hubby do it. I don't want a simple job turn into a major disaster to fix. What is a good labor price for the job if I hire a shop or mechanic to do it? Should I change the timing belt as well or if my van is running just fine just change the water pump and do I need to get more antifreese so that I only paay labor fees?

Your basic hand tools is all you really need. The only problem you might run into is the crankshaft pulley bolt, you might need a air impact gun or even a electric impact gun to remove the bolt. Sometime spinning the crank bolt by hand with just cause the motor to spin. The easiest way is jack the van up and place jack stands on the frame of the van ( towards the doors) then place the jack underneath the engine frame toward the passenger side by of the engine. Remove the motor mount on the passenger side on the top, and lower the jack so the engine drops lower then you will be able to get to it on the passenger side wheel well once you remove the tire and the plastic shield. Very important ! make sure you line up the timing marks on the sprockets when you put the belt on. it s a major job for most! Most shop will charge anywhere between 800.00 to a 1000.00 to have it replace.

Which engine, 3.0 - 3.3 -or 3.8 ? Some are easy some are not. Not a diy project if you have limited tools and skills and if you have it apart to that point it just makes sense to do the timing belt as you already have most of the components exposed, but that is another job best left to a pro, all you have to do is miss the settings by 1 tooth and you have to start all over again

1)Not really as long as you have a decent set of tools and possibly some star sockets.

    2)Yes

3)You run the risk of murdering your engine if you f-up the timing...if you have a ton of cash this shouldn't bother you, since your asking this question you probably don't so...if you have a mechanic in the family now would be the time to call him.

Major job, you have to rip everything including the timing belt off.
