Why don't high schools teach useful skills?

Now that ive been out of high school for almost 6 years I realized that there are many things I was never taught that would have been extremely useful, but never was. There were even more classes I took that were entirely useless.

I never had any intention of becoming a chemist. Why did I take chemistry? I would have been much better off in home economics where I could learn much more practical skills that were not completely useless outside a classroom.

Why don't high schools have classes that teach you how to do real-life things such as:

Fix a leaky faucet

Change a flat tire/perform general auto maintenance.

Read and understand a contract

Where/How to apply for a loan and not get screwed by it.

There really was nothing in high school that prepared me for adulthood. Reading Of Mice and Men, was great, but I could have dont that on my own time instead of wasting an entire month of school on it.

How did you gather sufficient knowledge to write this question? Apparently they did teach you how to properly communicate in English. (nice job btw) The role of high school is not necessarily to teach you all you need to know in adulthood. It's main purpose is to teach you how to learn. College teaches specific career skills. Things such as loan applications and basic contract law are generally the subject of high school business classes. Car maintenance is often covered in industrial arts classes specific to auto care. You should have taken these courses of study if you thought you would need them. Things like math and chemistry are useful in every day life (mine at least). Your time there was not a waste. While I politely disagree with your sentiment, I am really pleased to see someone actually post a question in proper English!
