Sound Card stopped working?

I am using Linux and, at first, I couldn't get sound to come out of my speakers although it would work with headphones (I know, it's strange). I ended up finding that just updating the ALSA driver fixed my problem. However, the next day, my sound card isn't even showing up at all. In the sound preferences and in GNOME ALSA mixer, the driver isn't showing up. Does anyone know how I can fix this and what the possible reason is for it to stop working?

(By the way, I know it's not the sound card going bad because my computer is Dual booted and it works fine in Windows)

Update:

@Ciaran O'Sullivan- It is Ubuntu 10.04 and the sound card is some kind of Realtek. Since I can no longer see the driver on the computer, I cannot see the model number either. My computer is a Compaq Presario CQ62-220US if it helps.

Update 2:

oh, sorry. It is a Compaq Presario CQ62-210US.

You need to tell us what Linux distro and Sound Card model you're running.
