  • Why am I not sad after death of family member?

My uncle unexpectedly passed away this past weekend and for some reason, I am feeling nothing. While this may be normal for some people, this is very unusual for me. When my grandfather passed away a few years ago, I sobbed for days. I wasn't extremely close to my uncle, but I lived with him for a few years when I was young and still built up a strong connection with him.

  • Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus won't install?

I have been trying to update my microsoft office with the 2013 version that I just purchased (on a disk) but cannot get it to install. It first told me to uninstall my previous version, which I did. However, whenever I try and install it now, the splash screen gets to "10% - Configuring..." stops and disappears after about 20 seconds. A few "integratedoffice.exe" processes remain active, but never continues. Anyone know what is happening?

  • How to calculate the magnetic field within a tape solenoid?

Think of a solenoid that is just like a roll of tape, only made of copper with a current flowing through it. How would you calculate the magnetic field of this?

  • How to calculate power consumption of inductor with square-wave AC source?

I am trying to design an electromagnet and I am trying to calculate the power consumption of it. Since I want to be able to control the frequency of the AC current, I have designed a circuit where I can control the frequency with a microcontroller, but it will have a square-wave voltage source.

The question I have is how do I calculate the resistance of the circuit? I know that you have to calculate the inductive reactance and the impedance if it was a sinusoidal AC current, but does that still apply to square-waves?

  • Can an electromagnet be powerful with a low voltage?

I'm trying to design an electromagnet with the highest magnetic force with the least power consumption possible. I know that the strength of the magnetic field depends mostly on the number of turns and the current flowing through the wire, but does this mean that I can have the voltage very low (like 1 volt or less even) to minimize the power consumption?

  • Is it worth taking out loans so that I can get experience?

I am about to graduate from a community college and preparing to transfer to a 4-year university. Although there is a university ~30 minutes away from home, I am wanting to transfer to another university ~2 hours away. Although the universities themselves are not much different in rank, I am looking at it in terms of experience.

If I go to the university close to home, I can avoid having to take out loans, or at least keep it minimal. However, the area that I live in has literally nothing to offer me in the way of experience. Although I am majoring in Electrical Engineering, I ultimately plan on going into Biomedical Engineering, the field that I want to acquire experience for.

On the other hand, the university that is farther away is a good area for Biomedical Engineering. Not only are there numerous Biomedical Engineering companies, the university also offers internships that I would like to apply for. This university also offers a minor in Biomedical Engineering which can also certainly help.

Although I probably sound like the stereotypical college student, I also really don't get along too well with my parents. We have very different opinions about a lot of things, and although I respect them, it's often hard to get along with them because of it. There is also literally no good place to study at home and my parents always have the TV blasting (which is right on the other side of my bedroom wall). Even when I tell them to turn it down, it goes right back up within a few minutes. I have lived with it long enough and I would like to move out, but my parents do have a point when it comes to avoiding loans.

At the same time, I do want to minimize loans right now because I do plan on going to grad school, which I will pretty much inevitably have to take out loans for. Since my goal is Georgia Tech, which does require experience to be competitive, I will need to get that experience somehow.

Which do you think is the better option: stay at home and avoid loans or move away and get experience?

  • Best universities worldwide to get a Master's in Biomedical Engineering?

I still have 2 years to go until I have my Bachelor's degree but I have been looking into good options for earning my Master's degree. I have had particular interest in Tampere University of Technology since Finland has free tuition, as well as the reputation as a more introvert-friendly culture (since I am very much an introvert), and even has English-speaking programs. However, I'm not sure how good of a program it is. At the same time, I realize that most of the good Biomedical Engineering programs are probably here in the US, although I probably won't have the grades to get into a top college.

What are some Biomedical Engineering programs outside of the US that are more affordable yet are still good programs?

  • What are my chances of getting into Biomedical Engineering program at Georgia Tech?

I am currently in my sophomore year at a community college and am wanting to transfer to Georgia Tech's Biomedical Engineering program after this year. I only have a 3.46 GPA (hopefully a 3.5 after this semester) but in honors, 600+ volunteer hours at a local hospital (mostly in the biomedical engineering department), an intern at a medical simulation research company, a member of 3 clubs, 2 of which I am an officer and one of those I started. I am also an Eagle Scout and a graduate of the medical magnet program in high school. I know that despite how involved I am, grades are what count the most. What are my chances of getting in?

  • Will this duplexer fit?

I currently have an HP Photosmart C4680 printer and am looking to get a duplexer for it. I have already bought one (the one here: http://www.amazon.com/HP-ph5712-duplexer-Q5712A-A2... ) and it turned out to be the wrong one so I am sending it back. I have continued to look for one and have found this one: http://www.amazon.com/HP-Duplexer/dp/B0018WRNN6/re... . Although it appears that it will fit (based on the shape), I am not certain if it will fit, since nowhere seems to say what printers it is compatible with. Does anyone know if it will work?

  • Can you connect a hard drive to a router?

I am going to get a wireless router that has a USB connection on it (shown here: http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/it... ). I plan on at least using the USB connection to connect my printer, but would it work to connect my external hard drive? If so, would it be possible to hook a hub to the connection and use both?

  • Sound Card stopped working?

I am using Linux and, at first, I couldn't get sound to come out of my speakers although it would work with headphones (I know, it's strange). I ended up finding that just updating the ALSA driver fixed my problem. However, the next day, my sound card isn't even showing up at all. In the sound preferences and in GNOME ALSA mixer, the driver isn't showing up. Does anyone know how I can fix this and what the possible reason is for it to stop working?

(By the way, I know it's not the sound card going bad because my computer is Dual booted and it works fine in Windows)

  • How to make sound work on Ubuntu?

I recently dual-booted my computer to now have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. However, despite having also gotten the codecs to be able to listen to music, it seems like my sound card driver is not installed and I have no idea how to install it. Can someone send me a link for me to get it and tell me how to install it? I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-210US which has a Realtek HD Audio card. Thanks!
