is this a sign of a fuel pump failing?
the other day i went to start my 1997 jeep cherokee sport and when i turned the ignition it was like my battery was dead except for a clicking noise that seemed to be coming from under the dashboard on the passenger side. but then i jiggled the key and hit underneath the ignition thinking it could be a wire problem at the ignition site and then it started. i told my son of the symptom of this and he guessed fuel pump. could it be that when i jiggled the key it had nothing to do with it starting the second time. it just starts sometimes and not others.i did put some stp fuel injector cleaner in about a month ago. could that have something to do with it. or could it be something totally different like my starter relay? thanks if anyone has an opinion. thanks.

******Not the fuel pump******. With a bad fuel pump you should still be able to spin the engine over like a banshee. I would suspect 98% that the starter solenoid contacts are getting worn. The starter solenoid is right on the starter. First check the condition of your battery cables and clamps, clean them up if it looks like it's needed. And check the connections at the starter...kind of a chore if it's a 4 liter. But no, it's not the fuel pump.

1997/just a coincidence it behaves when you hit it. have your connections checked (battery terminals) when the key don't get enough power to work the relay(probably on the side of the starter)it will just click repeating the start of its original function. the fuel pump has no interaction with the starter.

that,s not the pump. your car should turn over even if the pump was bad. sounds like the battery terminals, battery, ignition switch or the starter.

no, probably your starter is going out. check the relays to the starter before you replace the started.
if it was the fuel pump, you would have jerky driving and complete failure to start. the engine would turn over, but not start.

It seem like you might have Ignition key control problem, have it check with your workshop technician on ignition key module. Good luck.
