Foxes are digging holes in our lawn and flower beds,is there a way of stopping or discouraging them?

We are pretty sure it isn,t cats, the holes are too big and too deep.

Update:

Thanks for answering,George, but living in the U.K. we don,t have a problem with skunks.Nothing more exotic than foxes and the occasional badger or squirrel! x

keep the garden open with no big shrubs or rubbish where they can hide underneath. we have foxes for many years but never known for them to do this unless its under a greenhouse or shed to make a warren. dont put down any fertilizers or manure as this will attract them

you could try to get some fox repellent, that may help.

Yes they darned well DO imitate you. Mine did last year after I started tidying up and then went on to dig random holes in the lawn where I couldn't see her out of sheer devilment. Even after coming back from a long walk and before getting her food! I think they just can't stop themselves. Later in the year I let her 'help' me with the job of digging out a large bush (2ft down) and dragging it away. She hasn't dug in the garden since. But now the weather is nice again and she's out there more I expect she will. Burying her poop there worked for a while, so did putting prickly mahonia leaves on the re-turfed area, so did citronella oil for a while. You just have to be vigilant or fence them out.

fox or badger look around to see if a spot could get under fence and if is such a spot look for dark hair which would be left from a badger,

If its a fox fence no problem can go over a paling fence i know personal experience.

If its a fox you have to go out in the garden at odd times as they tend to find our movement times etc and move in the times not out and moving around the garden.

Could get a trap and if can capture can relocate well away from you ,

    But others might move in.after,

I know some people who got some Alpacas to keep foxes away from their chickens.

I can only guess they don't like the smell of them.

You may have a skunk problem. They like to dig in lawns or flower beds looking for insects. If you have insects like grubs in your yard that would attract them. Get rid of the insects you get rid of the problem. Another solution is to fence them out. Also Google skunks and skunk control.

Just tie a few cans on bits of string or garden wire and put it around the places you think they get in, they'll kick the string and the cans will hit each other, scaring them off.

Don't use any fertilizer, they can smell it and think something edible is buried there.
