can dinner forks and butter knives be wrapped and shipped in checked airline luggage?
my wifes relative died and she inherited some dinerware (forks, spoons and butter knives), Can she pack them in her checked luggage, when she flies home from funeral ? I know they are harmless, and bags are to be checked but was wondering if they were still considered a "nono" and bags would be opened and they would be removed.

You can legally pack knives, guns, machetes, swords and all kinds of things that actually are weapons, so silverware is no problem at all.
The only issue is that of value.... Are these items valuable, sterling silver or rare items? If so, then you probably should <<not>> pack them in your checked luggage. The problem is that valuables often disappear from checked luggage.
I suggest that you pack them carefully in a box and ship them - with the post office as registered, insured mail, or send the package via UPS or Fed Ex. Personally, I would prefer any of those options.

Roger is correct, they are just fine in your checked luggage (the spoons and forks would be alright in carry-on as well). If they are valuable you might be able to take out extra insurance. Depending on the exact type of butter knife, those might be able to go in carry-on as well, taking away the risk of loss.
