How can we help our new puppy to be friends with our pet rat?

We have a rat, and we'll be getting a puppy in about a week. I was wondering if anyone has some experience with teaching the dog to get along with small animals? We'd like for them to be friends :)

What are some good tips?

What breed of dog? If it's a terrier or any type of dog that hasn't had it's prey instinct dumbed down a ton, then you'd be best off just keeping the rat far away from the dog... behind a door where the dog will never be allowed to see or meet the rat. Trust me, most dogs will go after a rat, even those who are known to have NO prey drive at all.

Dogs have what is called prey drive - some breeds like terriers have it more than others. All dogs see rodents as prey. Don't expect the animals to "be friends" - it happens one time in a hundred and the rest of the time the rat or hamster or gerbil suffers the consequences. Just keep them separated.

Most dogs are hardwired to kill small rodents. My advice is to not risk your rat's life and do NOT try to "introduce" themas it could easily be fatal to the rat. Don't be foolish. Keep the rat and the dog well apart from each other with a tightly closed door between them.
