Devout Believers: Why is your faith so strong that you believe that there is no possibility God doesn't exist?

I am an agnostic, but wholeheartedly believe that if God does exist, He does not exist in the narrow scope in which Christians, Muslims, etc. define Him. Science has continually disproved the bible and koran, but there are still two questions we can't solve...where we came from and where we are going after death. Why is it so hard to say, "I don't know". Do you find it somewhat absurd that atheist writers observe without an agenda, while religious writers start with the preconceived notion that there IS a God and only examine "evidence" within that narrow scope?

Update:

There most certainly is a such thing as being agnostic...in fact, we all are if we are honest with ourselves. To answer your biblical quote more correctly, if those are my choices, I am against you. I have a great fear that the "my God is better than your God" argument between you and the Muslims is going to destroy this world as WMD's become more readily available.

Update 2:

No1,

Thank you for your response. That is the kind of conversation I am looking for. And yes, you are correct that my leanings are somewhat sided with atheism. However, I do keep an open mind and your question of why I don't believe in God or Jesus is exactly the same as my question to you as to why you don't believe in Zeus and Apollo. Forgive me if I can't accept your 'meeting' with Jesus as proof. And as for the disciples belief in God, why would I be anymore inclined to believe in the faithfulness of the Jonestown followers? You also mentioned morality, which I strongly believe in as an agnostic (you may argue that there has to be a universal morality and where does that come from), and I agree to some degree, but to say that it comes from Jesus concerns me. As an earlier poster told me, the bible says I am either "with or against" and if I remember that passage correctly, I believe it ends with me withering up like a stick if I dont believe. Is that universal morality?

Update 3:

PS No1Home,

I love CS Lewis..."Mere Christianity" is one of my favorites.

    Well, DW3624:

God gives us more information than you can imagine, or even know.

It is impossible for the unconverted to understand this, but for those who would serve Him unflinchingly, God has unfolded a latter-day prediction that explains the EXACT boundaries of this cosmic conflict and proves Jesus is the Messiah.

It says: "The wicked will do wickedly and the wicked will not understand, but the wise shall understand." http://revelado.org/thetimeoftheend.pdf will explain it for you.

Blessings as you search for that overwhelming evidence, Ben Yeshua

Source(s): BTW, We were created by and for God's glory, and at death..., Well, there are two resurrections, one of the righteous, and the resurrection of damnation where sin and sinners are eliminated--the wages of sin is death. You need be in the first resurrection (or re-creation).

I believe that the bible is basically an ancient fairytale. Back before there was electricity and everything, people used fictional stories to entertain each other. In my opinion, the bible story was passed on from generation to generation, parts got twisted and changed as more different people told the story, and people even began to believe it because it made them hopeful.

I believe in evolution. Remains of "cavemen" have been found. Plus, there is that rare mutation that makes people have thick hair all over their bodies, which I think makes them look similar to monkeys.

The Christian god is supposed to be all about love. One of the 10 commandments states that we should not kill. But according to every Christian I have talked to about war, it is okay to kill when you are fighting in a war. I think if this god is so loving and against his children killing each other, he would not make something as silly and unnecessary as war the exception if he existed.

I know exactly what my beliefs are. I believe in evolution. I believe that while we are alive, we are supposed to fulfill all of our goals and dreams, be as happy as we can, and believe in ourselves. And I believe that when we die, we continue to live our lives just as we did before, but in another world that sometimes collides with ours, which is when we see ghosts.

Having had an encounter with God in my mid-20's, I could no longer deny His existence.

I need to explain that I did NOT grow up in a Christian home. We were always taught that Jesus was a liar, a deceiver, possibly even a lunatic; but above all else, very definitely dead.

I have said before, and I'll say again, but "it's amazing how that once you actually meet some one, you can no longer deny his existence."

I met Jesus (in a spiritual sense), but it was very clear WHO He was, and at that moment, I had to decide if I would continue on the path I had been going on, which would have led to moral suicide, or acknowledge, accept, and even embrace what I had just been shown.

NOW, of course, after all these years, I am fully convinced that Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be, the very Son of God who died for MY sins, then rose again the morning of the 3rd day, thus proving once and for all that He IS alive, that He IS who He claimed to be, and that He DOES, after all, have ALL power and authority in heaven and on earth.

Back then, I only understood that Jesus was/is real, but by first stepping out and accepting this little bit, He has made Himself more real to me over the years.

So, what's YOUR reason for NOT believing? You SAY you are agnostic, but you TALK like an atheist. What wondrous event in your life convinced you that God is not real? Did the universe give you some kind of "revelation" of itself, in which you saw the entire universe from beginning to end, across the vast span of time or something? Did the universe "speak" to your soul, to show you that God doesn't exist? I mean, what, exactly, do you base your doubt on, precisely?

And, just a side note, why would 10 of the original followers of Jesus choose to die a martyrs death (one of whom was crucified upside down, which is far worse than a standard crucifixion), unless they were absolutely convinced that Jesus truly DID resurrect Himself just as He said He would do? Why wouldn't they simply recant, since their very life was at stake, and not just death, but usually torture and humiliation as well? What kind of event would drive a person to stake not only his reputation, but literally his very life and skin, on the belief that a man rose from the dead, unless it actually happened?

Many one-time atheists, upon personal investigation and research into the events, have had to give up their atheism. Even the outspoken atheist, Dr. Flew, had to concede that evolution was just too far fetched, what with all the discoveries of the DNA, had to finally admit that it was the result of intelligent design by SOME kind of Intelligent Designer.

There is a whole list of men who have drawn the same conclusion based on their own historical research, such as the man who wrote the novel, "Ben Hur", who started out to demonstrate that the resurrection was a totally fabricated lie, and as he studied and researched, had to change the direction of his novel, until it became what it is today.

Lee Strobel, C.S. Lewis, and so many others all started out as atheists, and ignored what others said, and did their OWN research, only to discover that Jesus truly DID rise from the dead on the morning of the 3rd day!

As they say, "Wise men still seek Him". Be wise, and seek for yourself, and ignore what other atheist mockers have to say, because THEY come from a predisposition that God does NOT exist, and THAT, without reason or evidence!

It is not enough to show a coincidence of phenomena (psychological needs and God) to assert a causal relation. Atheists must also show that man's need for a higher being preceded God's existence if they are to assert that the needs created God and not vice versa. Atheists must show why their belief in the non-existence of God is any more credible than the theists' belief in God. The rationalist assertion that God only exists if he is perceived by the subject is surely not how we approach the world. It would be ridiculous to claim that the existence of DNA depends on whether I am convinced of its reality. Though we routinely believe in many things we cannot see or fully understand, atheists have chosen not to believe in God.

Though most proponents of modern rationalism stop short of the radical implications of secular humanism, which truly deifies the individual, many do embrace the belief that the natural and social sciences will eventually explain away God. While certain biologists and physicists explore the mysteries of the origin of matter and life, some political scientists and sociologists formulate theories of social interaction without reference to objective morality.

The honest scientist, whether investigating nature or politics, should acknowledge that circumstantial evidence certainly favors the existence of a supernatural and transcendent being. My intention is not to prove any particular conception of God, but to show that atheism, which is often combined with moral relativism or a blind faith in science, is not the most probable explanation of the human condition. Rather, the most fundamental.aspects of God, supernaturalness and transcendentalism, are supported by all available evidence.

God is creative and thus supernatural. This is obvious from the basic physics principles concerning the creation of energy, matter, and order. The thermodynamic laws state that the sum total of matter and energy stays constant. It is impossible to create matter without expending energy or matter; it is similarly impossible to create energy without expending either matter or energy. The second law of thermodynamics states that total entropy is inevitably increasing; the universe must move from order toward disorder.

These principles lead to the conclusion that some uncreated being, particle, entity, or force is responsible for creating all matter and energy and for giving an initial order to the universe. Whether this process occurred through the Big Bang or through a literalist's interpretation of Genesis is irrelevant. What is crucial is that there must exist some uncreated being with the ability to create and give order. A being which defies the natural laws of physics concerning energy, matter, and order is necessitated by the very laws of nature.

    Good question.

We don't know (yet) how we came about (maybe abiogenesis). But we do know what happens once we die.

You see, neuroscience has concluded that our memories, personality, habits, opinions, beliefs, emotions (everything that defines who we are) are stored in and a function of the physical brain.

So, when our brain dies, everything that defines who we are dies too.

atheists do not need to prove that god doesnt exist, just like how we dont need to prove unicorns and santa dont exist. if there is no evidence for or against its existence, then there still is no reason to believe.

Science has never disproved The Qur'an. The Qur'an has scientific facts that no man could have known.

This includes the shape of the earth, embryonic development,The Big bang,ETC.

God is real. It is the god of the Jews and The Christians and The Muslims.
