Ubuntu install problems?

I have this 12 year old HP Pavilion 5663 with a M50 monitor. It has Windows 98 on it and I want to put the latest edition of Ubuntu on it (not the beta). I have a live CD and I try install it from that so I wait for 5 hours to wait for it to install looking like its working... You can see the orange bar move across the screen... After its at 100% done, it just gives me a purple screen. I did a "hard shut-off" and then it came up with the old HP logo and a black screen with a white blinking cursor. Every time I tried to press a key to bring up the BIOS settings, it just makes an annoying beep. What did I do wrong? Also, what key should I press to bring up the BIOS menu-thingy? Oh, and do you know of any website that can give me assistance with my old computer (other than Y!A and the HP website)?

Update:

Hey Joe, I have no clue what my computer specs are! How can I know the ram? I would guess it has 512 mb but I'm not sure.

How much memory (RAM) do you have?

Considering the machine's age, and that it was built for Windows 98, it could be as little as 128 MB. That's not enough to run Ubuntu.

    You might try "Puppy Linux":

    http://puppylinux.org/

which works well on stone-age computers.
