Why do Republicans ignore the fact that Social Security has a 2.5 trillion dollar surplus?

"According to the Congressional Budget Office -- the source cited in the article -- Social Security will continue to run a surplus for years to come, with the combined old age and disability trust funds projected to grow from $2.5 trillion in 2009 to $3.8 trillion in 2020."

The same reason they ignore the fact that when Clinton left office the money was in the bank to have the bridges & levees fixes in our country & the Army Corp of Engineers were working on this things but were stopped because of Bush. They warned him if the levees were not fixed that something like Katrina could happen & he said NO, we can't afford it. Why don't they ask how much it cost us because he didn't have this work done. Why do they insist that intelligent people are blaming Bush for a natural disaster when the truth is he is blamed for not fixing the levees & for his response to Katrina which is well documented by many people who were with him during that time?

    Shall I give more examples?

Oh, to answer the question, they are brainwashed by right wing media & I mean that LITERALLY.

I'm still trying to figure out how a filing cabinet full of IOUs constitutes any form of surplus. You like to blame Bush, but fail to realize that it is the Democrats that originally raped the Social Security Fund, when during the 60s, the Dems in charge of Congress placed the SS funds into the General Fund and promptly spent it.

Besides, it's not only Republicans who are talking about the impending demise of Social Security. Your precious Dems have also talked about it, even Algore brought it up.

SS always runs a surplus. Look at the government's debts. 4 trillion of it is IOUs to SS.

The "surplus" is not money, its treasury notes. A fancy name for an IOU.

Are Democrats aware of the fact that the government has "borrowed" against it for years and I.O.U.s from one section of the government to another are pretty much worthless.

yeah IOUs aren't real money to the thieves in office.
