How can I stop worrying about my weight?

I think and worry about how much I weigh constantly. I'm a normal weight for my age and height, and I wear a size 6 or 8. I exercise at a gym regularly, including weight training. However, I obsess about what I weigh and I'm always wishing I could lose 10 pounds. I refuse to buy new clothes just in case I lose that 10 pounds and go down a size. Every time I eat I worry if I will gain weight from it. My weight is steady, and if I gain or lose a couple of pounds it always returns to where it is now on its own.

I think I'm being irrational, and a huge burden would be lifted from my shoulders if I could let this go. How do I do it?

Update:

Stop pampering myself and take responsibility for my life? Great. That's just terrific. Thanks. I'm glad that advice is free.

Update 2:

We do not have television service, we don't go to the movies, and I am way too old to care about fashion magazines.

Update 3:

Thank you, Vera. I am indeed concerned about my thought pattern.

Update 4:

I had a really hard time choosing a best answer, and I appreciate all the advice, the links and the book suggestions. I've been very busy looking them up! Thank you for the care and concern you all showed me.

Ask yourself why you are prone to thinking so negatively about yourself and what it is that is really bothering you about yourself. When you discover the answers to those questions, you will stop obsessing about external factors.

You need to start to get a bit concerned about your thought pattern, because they way you think can easily start you down the road to destruction.. if you worry every day about one pound more on the scales and if you with when you are a size 8 to lose 10 lbs.. then you are in danger of becoming an anorexic.. that is the most deadly disorder.. please read about this.. and don't go down that way.. and also don't become a bulimic.. that is a very dangerous mental disorder.. that effects young adults between the age of 16 to 25 mainly... nowadays..females as well as males and the media is to blame for it a lot.. this is the most deadly mental disorder.. it has the highest mortality rate of all disorders.. it's not a disease but it's a mental disorder if someone takes laxatives, and only takes in 1000 cals per day and works out a lot.. and burns off 500 calories.. then their body is left with 500 calories.. the body will become deprived of important nutrients and because a lot of anorexics or bulemics take laxatives or bulemics throw up their food.. they also lack body fluid they are dehydrated and that is dangerous.... and anorexis and bulemics have a high risk because they don't eat enough or throw the food up again and take laxatives this will affect the heart muscles and the inner organs over time.. if a person is deprived of the necessary nutrients and dehydrated the not only his there a risk that the heart can't take it anymore, also the kidneys and the liver shut down.. when that happens they are at risk of dying...don't be another number in the statistics of anorexics.. because this is very destructive...

You need to change your mindset about food and maybe you need therapy to be able to do that.. I believe group therapy with other young people of your age group would be best.. so you can all learn from each others experience and you won't be alone and you will see that there a lots of young people who think like you.. I believe group therapy is more beneficial.. you will also make friends with the others and apart from getting therapeutic help you can be each others support system x

Maybe you should try to get on this Dr Phil community website.. just try to google it.. then you are part of a forum of people with an eating disorder and can get help by talking in the forum.. and getting active help as well...I think you should do that before you start down this road..x

I found the ''Dr Phil community website for you.. it has different topics.. you have to look under ''weight I believe'' and you have to find a user name and a password.. you can invent a new one.. and then you can participate her and also read stories from others...

Indeed, NS, you need to change your thought patterns. Difficult to do but not impossible. Try some of the self help available at the library. Tony Robbins's "Notes To A Friend" is short, simple & to the point. It'll help.

And if you do exercise, may I also suggest checking out some of the exercise/fitness sights, Arnold's "Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" at the lib, where I found it or here: http://product.half.ebay.com/The-New-Encyclopedia-...

Weight training, especially for women, I've found is great for toning & giving you the feeling you're actually accomplishing something. Remember, it's more about how you feel, than what you look like. It's about shape & form, not weight.

A person's body tends to a certain weight that is comfortable & natural for you. There are many things that can help you get to that point. What & how much you eat, WHEN you eat, the exercise you do. Again, you'll be surprised how good you'll look & feel if you give weight training a serious try for 6-8 weeks.

And it's not about dieting, or starving. definitely NEVER skip meals. My husband & I both bodybuild (not so much me, anymore. Kids) And some weeks, I couldn't eat enough. Thru research & practice, you'll find what is good for you & what to avoid. Remember it's a lifestyle - how you eat & exercise & look. It won't happen overnight.

Looks like you have some good advice. I wish I could help but I have been struggling with ED for almost a year now. Not that you are, but please be careful. I personally eat healthy but I started obsessing with exercise and dropped to a size 0-2 womens, 1-3 juniors, and I am beginning to feel the stress on my body now.

I'm glad you go to the gym, but please be careful as this can be an obsession also. Don't get into the trap of demanding more and more of yourself. Just be healthy.

So please take this seriously. My advice is not to compare yourself to others and don't even compete with yourself. Obsessions have many roots, get to the root of this obsession and seek counseling if needed (I never sought counseling and now I am struggling to gain weight and decrease exercise) so please be careful. Obsession with weight and body image can sneak up on you and before you know it you are in trouble.

I hope it works out for you.

You're asking a question yet you're not happy with the answers? It seems as if you will never be happy with the answers..

Size 6 or 8? Thats is the ideal weight isn't it? Like not the "normal" weight but its classified as skinny and 10 is probably classified as slim or "average",

Well what are you eating? Are you eating fatty foods which makes you afraid of putting on weight? It seems like you are naturally thin,,, therefore you could probably eat anything and keep excercising and you will maintain this ideal weight.

I usually worry about my weight when I'm procrastinating, i knwo this might not help, but find something else to keep your mind off weight and eat regualarily salads and proteins (meats and fish), keep excercising just moderatly. Maybe worry about your skin, or something else.. to take your mind off your weight.

Sounds like you have your weigh under control and have had it that way for quite some time.

    Stop worrying and be happy.

enjoy life to its fullest and if you do gain a few extra pounds just relax and remember it will come back into range as long as you keep doing exercises at the gym regularly.

All worrying does is make you feel older and tired and depressed.

Let it go and live your life being happy.

I think we all have some obsession with our weight. I am also a proper weight but I eat healthy and work out also. It is ok to be watchful, but not overly concerned. When it becomes an obsession it rules your life. You may want to consider counseling to get your thought process under control. It is not a shame to find out what the driving force is for this compulsion. Once you are able to dissect and understand it, you will be able to get back to a more enjoyable life.

God Bless and good luck to you.

How can you stop? Simple! Just stop. Stop pampering yourself and take some responsibility for your life and do what you believe is the best for you. It's about loving and accepting yourself. If you love yourself, you will choose what will make you feel good and what is best for you as a whole.
