Can a juvenile be tried in open court?

A little background... My 14 yr old son had a run in with an adult neighbor. We all went to court and the local municipal court judge, who is a lawyer by day and a judge by night, ordered both parties to stay away from each other. Us and the neighbor live in the same apartment complex. Opposite ends of the same building to be more precise. Neither the neighbor nor my son did abide by the judges order. Both were visiting friends that had apartments in the breezeway both parties were ordered to stay out of, my son and the neighbor did not talk to each other. The neighbor video taped my son entering and leaving his neighbors apartment, who shares his breezeway. When we went to court, as a follow up, the judge was shown the video tape and the he fined ME $400, gave ME a 90 day suspended jail sentence, and put ME on 24 months probation, because I could not control my son. I was not aware my son was even going into that breezeway.

We returned to court recently, another follow up, and the neighbor told the judge my son is still coming into his breezeway. The judge asked my son how he pleads and my son said not guilty. The judge set his trial date for the middle of October in the city court. The same court you go to for speeding, having no insurance, DUI etc.

My question is, can my son be tried in open court at the age of 15, he has had a birthday since all this started. I was under the impression a juvenile had to be tried in a closed courtroom. If he is tried in open court will it be considered a violation of his rights as a juvenile?

Update:

Voice... First of all you know nothing about my parenting skills. When you have a teenager I want you to tell me that you know where your kids are and what they are doing 24/7. If you think you do, then you are a fool. I am concerned about my son, but I am also concerned when I am recently unemployed and something costs me $400, puts me on probation, and can possibly send me to jail for 90 days. Considering I am 46 and the most legal trouble I have ever had in my life was 3 speeding tickets as a teenager.

As a criminal justice worker, I must say this sounds crazy as hell. What state do you live in? Anyways the only reason why the judge sentenced you was because your son is a minor and you are an adult. However, i must say the sentencing is way harsh. Yes all juveniles under the age of 17 are tried in a closed court. However, the judge seems a little shady. My suggestion to you is get a lawyer otherwise you might get screwed over. Also the lawyer can help reduce and punishment that the judge gives you or your son.

    good luck

    hope this helped

Yes, a juvenile can be tried in open court.

Frankly it sounds like you are more concerned about yourself than your son. Maybe if you worked harder on being a parent, your son would stay out of your neighbor's breezeway.

I agree with Voice of Reason. Why do you think you got fined?

Yes, I have five teenagers, and I can tell you where they all are, and what they are all doing, 24/7.

Yes, sometimes court can be very boring for young children. I suggest giving them something to do like a portable video game or something of the like.
