Does a DVD file lose quality when converting to AVI file then burning to DVD?

I converted a bunch of DVDrip downloads to AVI because they were MP4 etc or had subtitle files (you cannot burn these to DVD). I am new to converting and I converted them to AVI. Then burnt them to DVD. I realise now I could of converted them to DVD then burnt them and I`m wondering if they lost quality converting to AVI. Also I'm hoping the quality came back in burning to DVD. Hope someone can answer this for me please? Thanks

Yes they will lose quality, it'll be very apparent if you play the avi-to-dvds on a HD tv.

The average DVD movie takes up 4GB whilst the average avi movie is 700MB, that's almost 3.5GB of picture and sound quality crunched down and gone.

why not just convert the mp4's to dvd with convertxtodvd, you can include your subtitles in with the mp4 along with menu and chapter's and if you have a mess with the settings and select long encoding time/high quality you wont notice any degredation when u watch it on any size tv as long as your using "dvdrips",on my computer(1.8 phenom quadcore) only takes about half an hour to convert and burn to a dvd

Each conversion loses a little quality. So the hard answer is "yes".

However, when viewing on a television u may not notice the degradation that much.
