Can a broken ankle cause blood sugar to rise?

I know this sounds stupid but my blood sugar has been under control and last week I fell and broke my ankle. I am in a temporary cast and have to take muscle relaxants due to spasm's in my foot. Since then my blood sugar has been over 200 could this be related?

Update:

I am a type 2 diabetic and take insulin as well as pills. All was working fine with nice blood sugars of aprx 120. Now its over 200. Insulin does not seem to be working nor does the pills. I have increased the insulin doubled my pills and nothing changes. I give up already

That is enough stress to cause your sugars to be all over the place.

If you are a type 1, you should know how to increase your insulin accordingly.

If you are type 2 and not able to get any exercise , consult with your doctor.

  • This is a very sensible question. The answer is probably not. It takes a considerable degree of stress to elevate blood glucose substantially. It is unlikely that a simply fracture that did not require surgery would elevate your glucose substantially. It would be helpful to know if you are type 1 or type 2 and your over-all level of diabetic control. If you are on oral medications you may wish to consider the possibility of a drug interaction between your diabetic medications and whatever you are taking for pain even if it is over-the-counter as well as the muscle relaxant. Again if you provide additional information I will try to be of further assistance. johnerussomd@jhu.edu I wish you the very best of health and happiness and in all things may God bless. JR

    Oh no.

It is because you are rendered inactive and cannot burn your Fat and Calories, that your Blood Sugar has increased. Broken ankle is not a cause IT IS A FACTOR.
