It Seems that YA is saturated with atheists and agnostics...?
I am told that 91% of Americans believe in God. Why are the majority of people on here non-believers? Is it possible that agnostics/atheists are underrepresented in these studies? If so, why? Or does the small minority of non-believers just have no life so therefore have to entertain themselves by discussing theological issues with strangers? (BTW, I am agnostic).

Could we be underrepresented in such polls? Sure. It's still taboo and asking for prejudice if you admit to it, so many people probably don't say. Especially in some places. I've never trusted atheist/agnostic percents to be too accurate for that reason.
No life? Why, becasue people are here? Well if those with your viewpoint have largely kept quiet about it for centuries and even still most do, then people like you are pretty invisible so in this day and age sites like this become the water cooler. They come across it, see others here and stay. *shrug*

Fear of rejection. A need to belong. There are atheists in every church who are afraid to admit it.

We're not underrepresented, it's just that a good portion of the religious understand inevitability and are waiting in the Mythology section for their religion so they can discuss it again :P

That's not right at all. Is this 91% one of those Glenn Beck "rectum-derived" facts?
Many Americans "believe in belief"---that is, they think religion is good for you. But I doubt more than half, if that many, actually believe in a "Supreme Being" and I bet less than 25% believe in a literal Big Man with a Beard and all that Bible stuff.
Americans' idea of spirituality is quite diverse, and some of it is pretty wiggy and not at all in line with Christian tradition.

Firstly,in America the percentage of believers is closer to 85%(and not all of them are the same religion),and secondly, this is the internet and hence the world, and not a suburb of the USA.

This is a forum about religion and spirituality. It makes sense that the people most likely to want to answer questions here are those who have strong opinions on the subject.

No actually according to ARIS 18% of americans are
atheist and about 55% are religious but do not participate
in church or church services and church sponsored events.
The phrase Enlightened Era has been coined
for the Rapid Decline in Christianity.

Actually, only 60 or so percent of Americans believe in the Christian interpretation of God (and those statistics are from 2001, mind you, so it may well have diminished-or gone up, who knows.) Of those who did not, a fifth or so were atheists. And alot of YA "atheism" is trolls. Sorry, guys, but it's true.

When asking stupid questions on the internet it is best not to pretend you have a life. Just admit that we're all lazy and have nothing better to do on a Tuesday night.

It is easier to go online and express your beliefs than it is to go out and express them.
It is impossible to know how many people are truly atheists. Some act like Christians in the real world and then come on here to post their real views.
Also, atheists can hide behind avatars and usernames. That way they can stay anonymous. Furthermore, some people here have more than one account.
Many atheists are teenagers and young adults who think they know the whole truth about religion. They come here so they can smugly ridicule us for our superstitious beliefs and such.
