A thousand years ago, poetry was necessary. A hundred years ago, poetry was alive. Fifty years ago poetry was profitable. Now it is the bastion of Ph'D ne'erdowells and love sick teenagers.
I love some of the things folks in here have made me see, think and feel. Isn't that enough?
The word, by the way is full of nice, unreadable poems. The better poets (notice I didn't say best) write about prostitutes, serial killers and child abuse, because they lack the imagination to really go somewhere in this dead, dead form. Their themes match the degeneration of poetry (and by that I am not entering the free verse against rhyme debate, I am talking about the PURPOSES of poetry being dead.)
Those who most strongly disagree with me have a VESTED INTEREST in my being wrong. Either they are internet vanity press operator, or teachers, or self-promoters or con artists. Yahoo poetry has about 50 of them, who say "50 years a poet" when they mean "I earn my living off of you starvlings."
Talent will out, even in a dead art. I am a hack, but some in here write interesting and beautiful stuff. And when I think Love Child or IWMD or Dallas have written a piece of garbage I tell them so. It does not detract from their abilities that I have one bad opinion.
But the Poet Laureate of the United States cannot LIVE OFF OF POETRY, and nobody remembers who she is NOW let alone 50 years from now.
Just enjoy, critique and bond with people who share poetic sensibilities. That's why I am here.

Hey Indian Dotter This is the easiest question I have answered all day. Bob Dylan is without question (In my opinion) the master poet of rock n roll or any music for that matter, no one writes lyrics like him. My favorite part of the song Hurricane. BQ.. Rubin Carter was falsely tried The crime was murder 'one' guess who testified Bello and Bradley and they both boldly lied And the newspapers they all went along for the ride How can the life of such a man Be in the palm of some fool's hand ? To see him obviously framed Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land Where justice is a game. Or these lyrics from Subterranean Homesick Blues Johny's in the basement Mixing up the medicine I'm on the pavement Thinking about the government The man in the trench coat Badge out, laid off Says he's got a bad cough Wants to get it paid off Look out kid It's somethin' you did God knows when But you're doin' it again You better duck down the alley way Lookin' for a new friend The man in the coon-skip cap In the big pen Wants eleven dollar bills You only got ten. BBQ:I hate reading books, I will leave it at that lol. BBBQ: a)No I can't say I have :) b) turned 21 a few days ago

I do not see poetry as a means to fame nor fortune.
Poetry to me, written or read, and in any form....is simply part of my life. Like the air I breathe. I consider it a beautiful art form.
I find that through poetry one can honestly express feelings in a more passionate/romantic way. Writing about those I love, or about what is happening in my life in general is a great outlet, and that is my only reward.
If someone out there finds it enjoyable to read, then that is a bonus...but praise is not expected nor needed. I do it just for me.

Fame does not interest me, Fortune I'm earning by more certain means. The music in my head is the music of algebraic varieties and elliptic curves. Poetry's music I love too, but well written prose can itself be musical; it has its own rhythms, which are part and parcel of its expressive power. I love writing more generally. I read a minimum of five hours every day and I write for a living; I live in a temple of texts (literally as well as figuratively: I have over 5,000 books here and stopped counting years ago). I'm not led by poetry but my life is shaped by it in interesting ways..

Poetry is my passion Caz. I love both reading it and writing it. It will never pay the bills or make me famous, I know that only too well. But hey, it would be rather nice to leave something when I'm gone to be passed down the family line. I'd love my grandchildren to remember me for my artistic touch as well as my loving one. I'd like to leave one really good poem that would be remembered. I'm still searching for it.
