My electric company is asking for a faxed copy of my Social Security card and Photo ID?
Tampa electric company (TECO) is asking me for faxed copy o f social security card and photo ID to verify my account. To me, this sounds incredibly dangerous to do (for identity theft purposes). They said I mayNOT give it to them personally and it may only be done through fax. They already have my SS# (which I find sufficient enough, so why would they need a COPY of it??) and they have run a credit check with Equifax (who also made me give then a crap-load of information like the address of the past 4 residences I've lived at etc). I have yet to receive an electric bill for the 2 months I've been in my new apt. I need some advice on the situation. I don't want to get into any trouble with the law or harm my credit score by not paying the electric bill (which I have yet to receive), but I also don't want to give out my information like that. It just sounds WAY to sketchy.
I number I called, to talk to a representative, was the number the electric company has posted on their website.

Call the electric company by looking up the number yourself. You want to make sure you're talking to the electric company and not some scammer. Of if it's handy go to their office. Ask them about it. Not being able to give the number to them personally does sound very suspicious. I wouldn't do it myself. Double check to make sure that you're dealing with the electric company and ask them why you can't bring this information in in person.
