puppy heat and spaying questionS (please see details)?

i have a 9 month old female puppy who is in her first heat.. and i have a 3 year old male un neutered dog.. so just saying that you could already imagine how crazy it is in my house right now, trying to keep them apart. yes i do plan on getting her spayed next month (they say you have to wait a month after her heat is over to get her spayed).. NOWW my questions are.. #1. will my male dog stop trying to hump her when her heat is over? #2. how long does a heat last? #3.once i get her spayed will he keep trying to hump her (will the scent still be on her)? [i already know all the pros and cons of not spaying/neutering dogs so please theres no need for any nasty comments, just straight answers to help me. thanks in advance]

Ye Gods - don't allow your male dog ANYWHERE NEAR your in-season female. He should not be allowed to be humping her AT ALL.

Straight answer - since you have persisted in having two entire dogs of the opposite sex you now have to completely separate these two. Both need to be in crates, in rooms at the opposite ends of your house. And if you can, take your female outside, on her lead, to a completely different area to where your male goes. If he finds her pee, it will wind him up big time - you've probably already noted that he's standing over where she pees, licking at it.

As I think you need to know - seasons in the b itch last for 21 days. Normally (and no two bitches are exactly the same) the first week involves her having a blood-coloured discharge. Towards day 10 this discharge will have lessened, and lightened to a pale straw colour. Days 10 through 14 are the days she'll be ready to be mated ** - will stand for a dog. And it's ABSOLUTELY VITAL that he doesn't get anywhere near her at this time. BE WARNED, some bitches will stand early, during the first week, while others won't stand until into the third week. By the third week, her discharge will gradually stop. Do Not be fooled that she's out of season - not until 21 days from the state + a few days in case you missed the true start of her season.

Once she's out of season, with any luck, regardless of whether there's any lingering scent (and I'd give her a bath actually) if he approaches her with sex on his mind, she should 'take him apart'. And this is what you want - her to put him off because any amount of you trying to stop him mounting her, won't be half as good as her telling him he's too late mate.

Meanwhile please please, no more 'trying to hump her'. It only takes a minute, and one time to produce a litter of puppies.

Book her in to be spayed 2/3 months (midway between seasons is the right time) from now. And pray to God that you are not too late to have stopped a pregnancy this time.

Add ** she will not be ready to be mated for 7 days!! It's usually 2/3 days maximum.

a heat cycle lasts 21 days, 7 days on, 7 days to mate and 7 days going out of heat. Once she gets spayed no she won't have the "scent" because she will no longer bleed and emit the scent so he might try to hump her for dominance and because he's still intact doesn't mean she will let him. Most spayed females do not like to be humped.

Just because she is spayed doesn't mean the male will stop trying to hump her. Now, if you get him fixed he will stop.

There is no good reason to keep your dogs intact, in fact it's healthier if you don't.

The heat cycle lasts 3 weeks. Nothing, short of getting it neutered, will stop an intact male dog from having urges. So yes, he will still try to hump her.

Please try to keep them apart! My dog was spayed at 3 months and she never went into heat! So I don't think it matters how long you wait.

Sorry I don't know more about it.

Oh and I think unneutered male dogs will always hump. When my dog was 7 months she got humped by 2 different dogs when we took her to a park. She obviously wasn't in heat since she had been fixed, so you will probably need to fix him too.

You want to keep her separated now, until after her season when you spay her. Despite that she is going to stop bleeding, that is when most dogs ovulate. Especially being this is her first, there is no telling how her cycle will pan out. It iwill be best to keep them seperate until affter her surgery in a couple of weeks.

Have you considered having him neutered right now?

Some advice, keep them crated next to each other(the boys tend to stay more calm if he knows she is right there). Set a 2 barrier rule around the house--the dogs must be separated by 2 barriers--you never know when romeo (or juliet) will get it in their brains to break out of an enclosure they have never gotten out of in their lustful furver to do as nature intended That gives you some time if this happens before they are together.

Also, if they do get together, let them finish the tie and call your vet immediately, he will tell you your options.

    Good luck.

    1. if your dog is trying to dominate your female then yes it may or may not continue it just depends on your pup

    2. usually no longer than 3 weeks but again depend on the dog some dogs breach that lol

    3. if you wait a month after to get her spayed then yes her heat scent will be gone so if he continues to try to hump then he's prob trying to be dominant

Both animals need to be fixed.

    1) He will stop humping her to mate. He may continue humping her to establish his dominance over her. Correct his behaviour.

    2) 3 weeks

    3) He won't want to mate with her, but you still need to neuter him.
