I need IT backup/storage advice!?
I'm getting more and more weary that we aren't backing up our computers at work and that I really need to find a good solution that doesn't cost a fortune, yet still leaves the data readily available for quick access...
We're only a small budget so I don't really want to buy a tape drive etc. (Aren't they old tech now anyway?)
Is it worth getting a Blueray Recorder? some sort of NAS? Stick to DVD-Rs?
Do hard drives keep the data on them for many years even if they aren't plugged in? Can they be kept in box without the data deteriorating?
Any helpful advice warmly welcomed!
Thanks,
Ben
PS - We've got about 500GB to backup!! so that's a LOT of DVD-Rs... hence wondering if a couple of 1TB HDDs are the way to go!!!

You could use a couple of TB HDD, however most Business dont use hard copy backups in case of theft. It all depends what work needs to be backed up. The best thing to use is online storage, then if anything goes wrong or you need to access info from somewhere else in the world etc then its easy to do and you dont have to take physical backups.
You can find lots of online storage sites for small Business that would be cheaper than buying HDD etc. Do your research and try and look at reviews

If you have multiple workstations to back up and your info is valuable get a (NAS)network storage hard drive enclosure with 2 hard drive bays that supports raid. Raid is essential for backing up valuable data as it provides you with redundancy that a single drive enclosure cannot. You can buy these enclosures with raid pre installed to make your life easier. A server is another option though this would require setting up and regular maintenance, if you are a small business go for the NAS enclousre as its cheaper and less fuss.

You can buy a 2TB or even a 4TB Hard drive for about £200 and £300 , the data is fine for years and is a box like a server size computer.

Portable/External Hard Drive's are the way to go man. Yes they do keep the data even if it isn't plugged or used for ages.

I suggest you consider a Drobo Network Storage device.
This unit is self managed and easy to set up.
