Having problems with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04?

Started up Ubuntu this morning, it's been running great for me but all of a sudden today, my icons are huge, my sound card is no longer installed, and I can't even reboot. When I pick reboot or shut down it just takes me back to the login screen. What the heck?

Update:

Well OK it seems to be back running fine now. There were apparently two updates that were applied (both having to do with ssl), and afterward it wanted to reboot but again, it kept going back to the login screen instead of fully rebooting. I managed to get it to reboot by invoking sudo init 6 at the terminal. when it rebooted, everything is working fine. I wonder if it was those updates, I remember yesterday there were two updates for ssl as well...
