when to hibernate my russian tortoise?
My little russian torty, Irwin (after Steve RIP) is 3 years old. I have had him two winters and never hibernated him as I read it was too early. Now I have read an article saying that i should. i hav got an appt with the vet but am a bit anxious as she doesn't know much either! I would really appreciate advice from any experienced tortoise owners (preferably those with russian torts) about hibernation.
Thanks

Hello.
Russian tortoises are great as pets. Although, hibernation is not required and is quite difficult. I would recommend taking him to a exotic pet vet, they should give him an exam and give you some more accurate information. thanks
best of luck to you
srry about your previous tortoise! =(

Tortoises hibernate interior the wintry climate, while temperatures drop. My 2 3 twelve months previous Russian Tortoises on occasion sleep for days at a time in this summer season. i think of it relatively is by using fact we use our cooler a lot. experience reptiles are chilly-blooded their blood ameliorations with the tempertures around them. whether that's chilly, they are going to be sluggish, lazy and sleep most of the time. whether that's warm and humid, they are going to be lively and curious. There you bypass.:)

They do not hibernate unless they need to, most pet torts don't. They hibernate to get through the winter, so if you keep him inside with proper lighting and heat, there is no need. If you were ever to breed them, you would have to cycle them, but even then, they may not hibernate.
