Tim B - you may have sucked a piece of clothing around the drive shaft.
You need to loosen the very top of the agitator, usually counterclockwise, like a big nut and lift off the agitator.
You will know immediately know if something is jammed between the gasket and the drive shaft.
If that is clear you may have dropped a belt from the motor to the drive shaft.
You will need to drain the machine and tilt it back to see.
Good luck.

to remove agitator on ge put your fingers under the agitator ,its a tight fit , and give it a sudden jerk and it will come off, if you remove splash guard from top of tub you can see between outer tub and inner tub to see if clothing is undr inner tub,
