What's the most horsepower that can be squeezed from a 1972 Plymouth 318 V8?

As said, it's a 1972 Plymouth 318 V8. It's sitting in a Scamp that originally had a 340. It has a 2 brl Weber carb, stock exhaust and air intake but there are hood scoops that could be used, and a 723 tranny. I'm thinkin this is rated at 230 hp... Any thoughts on what could be done with it? Possibly a bigger 4 brl carb and exhaust? I'm not sure... thanks in advance!

The 318 was rated 230 "gross horsepower" and about 150 "net horsepower". The biggest engine in the Scamp was the 318, the 340 was reserved for the Duster. The automatic transmissions available were the 904 and the 727. You more than likely have the 904 behind the 318 but there was a 727 built for heavy duty use to go behind the 318.

Mopar engines love to breathe, headers, 2 1/2 inch dual exhaust system, aluminum dual-plane four barrel intake manifold and a 600 CFM four barrel carburetor will really help wake up the engine as long as the engine is in good condition. If not already factory installed the Mopar electronic distributor is an excellent addition.

These modifications are fairly simple, not too expensive and will actually add to your MPG if you don't "hot rod" the car , if you want more power a cam will help but this addition will put you on the edge of lower MPG.

They were in many chrysler cars and trucks from 1972 through 1978 and were low compression and not very powerful. But, as mentioned already can be made into a powerful eng. They did all have cast cranks too. I am building one now into a 512 cubic inch, it will have GOBS of torque.

i own a 71 that runs about 365 horse power with not to many additions made to it,i got 340 heads with headers and a dual plane four barrel intake with a 600 edelbrock carb, and an accel electronic ignition system and i can easily get 365 at the rear wheels with it,it has no problems smoking the rear tires in any gear,it also has the 727 tranny in it,good luck

Trans's are 727's and 904's. No scamps came with 340's. Build a stroker. that'll get you some torque.

I'm sorry, that came with 150 hp. You can build it up to 300. They love headers and a high rise, 650 cfm. carb, high energy ignition, advance timing, some porting and polishing heads, and a mild cam.
