Is there a rooster bad enough to take on a raccoon or an opossum?

I have heard, and even had roosters take on predators. However, most cases result in dealth or injury to the rooster. And many roosters would just run away, it takes a certain personality for a rooster to really be brave enough to defend his girls.

If you want a protective animal I would suggest a good dog, or a goose. Another thing you could do is get the nighttime predator protector

I have also heard that hanging blinking red Christmas lights is also effective.

Some roosters are tough. Ours would attack my son (thinking he was after the hens lol) BUT keep in mind raccoons and opossums are nocturnal and at dusk a rooster will roost just like a hen. They are extremely vulnerable then.

My father has rigged up some rainbirds on motion detectors. They keep deer away from the garden, and they should work around the hen house too. (It cracks the old guy up when I forget about them and get soaked)

Recently they had a skunk after the hens so my brother borrowed a trap and caught him and relocated him down by the river. In this area our local pet rescue group will loan out those traps when you put down a deposit, and return the deposit when you return the trap.

Predators will always go after the hens when on the roost so make sure your roost is high too to give them a chance.

Roosters are pretty tough and I bet could take on a raccoon or an oppossum. I wouldn't suggest putting a rooster up to it though because if the raccoon or the oppossum was to have rabies and it bites your rooster, it can give the rabies to the rooster. I would suggest a dog that could take a raccoon or an oppossum down easily, rather then have a rooster defend your property. :). Good luck!

My granny raised chickens when I was a little girl, I don't know that much about them, but I do remember a certain kind of rooster that was super cocky...no pun intended...lol

It was called a bantam I believe, and just a little thing, but it wasn't afraid to buck up to any thing on the yard.

Maybe you should look into getting one of those little fellers.

when i went to get my 2 hens today this old fella had some light sussex's and my god was the rooster one big mother fuc*er he was bigger then my dogs (gsd's) if i had him in my garden the sign would be ......
