Dog with strange symptoms?
My friends dog, a mastiff cross, fell very ill yesterday. He was lethargic, could not stand, and vomited once. He seemed very close to death. Today he seems a little better, but his eyeballs are flicking back and forth, like he has the spins. He is very unsteady on his feet, and falls over like he's drunk. I've looked up his symptoms online, and it seems like maybe antifreeze poisoning? But nothing mentions the flicking eyeballs. Unfortunatly, there is no money to take him to the vet. Has anyone seen these symptoms before? We love him, and we want him to get better.
As I mentioned, he is not my dog. He is a friends dog. If I had the money, I would pay for him myself. But I will pass on the actual helpful answers, and hopefully they will find a way.

If he is an old dog, he could have vestibular syndrome. The eye flicking is called nystagmus, and its a sign that the balance center in the brain (the vestibular apparatus) or the inner ear have been compromised. If he has vestibular syndrome, he should gradually get better. Put his food and water right next to him and prop him in a Sphynx like position and clean around him, don't make him go outside till he can walk properly. If its anything else, he will get worse and your choices then are linited. Good luck.

With symptoms this severe- of course the dog needs to be checked out by the vet. And the reality is that you could be up for some hefty vet bills.
I have actually heard of a condition that causes this. It is basically like inner ear syndrome in humans. It causes the dog to become dizzy, and you will see the eyes constantly moving up and down and around because the dog is having incredible difficulty trying to balance.
Unfortunately, although this condition can be treated, it is not always possible to treat- depending on what is causing the condition.

The dog needs to see a vet, or at least you should contact the vet and ask about the symptoms, and whether they will go away without treatment, the possibility of treatment, or whether it is better in your friends current financial status to consider euthenasing the dog if they are not willing to treat the illness.

Is he an older dog? It could be vestibular disease- the eye condition is called nystagmus. Even if that were the cause- he still needs to see a vet. And if it isn't--and the problem is some poisoning , delaying a vet visit is going to mean eventual death for him. Ask the vet about a payment plan, borrow money, pawn something. Your love means nothing if you can't give him veterinary care when he needs it.

If his eyes ar4e flickering there is something happening in his brain, usually trauma to the brain. He sounds like he had a seizure, he needs to be seen by the vet dogs suffer seizure too and can die from them. He might suffer from epilepsy was he paddling his feet at all. Usually if they seizure their temperature goes so high it can cause brain damage. Get him to the vet! Otherwise inner ears infection or he has been poisoned.

flicking of the eyes is called nystagmus.. it's associated with neurological disorders and toxicity.. so either there is something going on with the brain or hes injested some kind of toxin..
Neurological signs are poor balance.. failure to correct foot when you roll the toes under, lethargy, circling, head tilting etc.
He needs a vet asap or hell likely die.

vestibular syndrome - no question
It can be bad but don't put the dog down -- it will recover. Expensive meds not necessary, it will resolve its self. It can be bad for awhile though, they will be vomiting and have trouble walking until the dizzyness resolves

Take him to the vet.I have never heard of anything like this.I know you said you have no money but NEED to take him.Maybe sell some stuff. You should have thought about if you had the money BEFORE you got the animal.Because now you have it,its sick and you cant take care of it.That is VERY irresponsible.

you wont find good enough answers on the internet, the only thing that can help you is the vet and you know it
