How do I get my router to work with my computer?

I have a Linksys by Cisco. I bought it and hooked it up and it worked fine. I moved and got a new phone number and now it will not work with my computer. I have an HP laptop. I know the thing works as it did when I unplugged it at the other address. Do I have to somehow uninstall the thing or what? I have Windows 7 and I have no idea at all on how to even uninstall anything. Why isn't it like the old days when they gave you all kinds of books with it? They charge you enough for the computer and you don't get any disks or manuals or anything. Anyway I sure need help it getting the router to work. I am hooked up to my DSL line and I have the Internet I am just unable to go wireless. I can't use my wireless printer or anything and the computer doesn't like my old printer that I had hooked to my XP computer. I am still stumped on Basic from years past, now this Windows 7 and no manuals. I can't even find a Windows 7 For Dummies book in a store. I am stumped and really need your help with the router problem. I might add, I have the same Internet provider, the only thing that has changed is my location and phone number. The phone company and my IP did give me a name and password that they provided to access my modem that they sent me. It is the same make and model as I had at the other place. Please help me: Thank you and have a great day.. Tom

Please state the model of your Linksys router. I would recommend that you reset your entire router and start all over again. To reset your Linksys router, hold down the reset button on your router. Note, you might have to use a small object (i.e. Paperclip, Pencil tip, etc.) to reach the reset button. Typically, the reset button will be located on the back of a Linksys router. Press and hold down the reset button for 5-15 seconds. The lights on the router should flash signaling that the reset process has completed. Connect to your router via cord or wireless. If connecting your router to your computer cord, you might have to add/install the device and setup your network. Whilst connected to the router open a web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) and type "192.168.1.1" or the IP of your default gateway which can be found by typing "ipconfig" in the command prompt. When prompted to enter a password type "admin" for the username and leave the password field blank. If that fails, refer to your routers manual. Now, modify your routers settings and ensure you add security to prevent unwanted people from accessing your network.

If you are still unable to access the internet, also check your firewall settings. You can also check with your ISP.

If you are still encountering issues, feel free to contact me.

A wi-fi router is strictly the equal as a stressed router. It simply entails an additional characteristic - it broadcast a wi-fi sign. If you connect with a wi-fi router making use of a cable, the velocity is same to a consistent router. It has a constant velocity of 100mbps. However, a wi-fi router is best equipped to run at fifty four mpbs at its first-rate. If there's any type of interference, distance, partitions, pipes, and so forth, it'll be slower than that. If you desire the better velocity, without problems use a twine along with your present router. You don't have got to change it with a non-wi-fi router. Just use the stressed as a substitute then the wi-fi facet of the router.

Hey Tom. I have a Linksys router as well.. Are you sure you have internet access with the router...? Check that out. If you have a password for it,don't worry. There's a battery inside of the router that saves the part for passwords... Do this, turn off your laptop. Unplug your router and unplug the modem it's connected to at least up to 1 minute each. If all of the components are placed properly(Modem cord to router)plug in the modem. Then, plug in your router. Then turn on your laptop. Check to see if your wifi indicator is on. You may have to type in your password. And then,WHYLA !!!!!!! Hope this helped you out Tom..

The router still contains all the settings from your previous residence, so you're going to have do the set up process again.

Most ISPs will help you with this, and all the manuals and instructions are available at the Linksys web site.

The reason for the lack of manuals is cost. Also, these manuals are frequently out of date as soon as they are published.

The Windows Help files have never been great, but they're helpful in most cases. There are many sites devoted to helping you with Win7.
