What can I buy that is similar to a gate to put on a railing behind a sofa?
I am getting a puppy and I do not want to take a chance when he gets bigger that he mistakingly jumps over the couch and has a 8 foot drop down the stairs. There is no where else to put the couch and my fear is when the dog is bigger he will jump on the back and not realize the railing is right there leading to the staircase. My wife says he will learn, but in my opinion, one mistake can lead to horrible results. Any idea of what I can buy to either attach to the railing or something else? Thanks
Well when you walk into the apartment, you walk up stairs inside the apartment (so only we use them). The stairs have a railing, just like houses do when you have an open hallway upstairs. The couch is pressed up against this railing.

I guess if you look over the railing, you see the stairs. SO if someone walks into the apartment I can look over and see who is talking up the stairs. It's a wide opening above the railing. And the couch is pressed up against the railing. If I stood on back of the couch. There would be nothing protecting me from going over the railing and landing on the stairs. I hope this clarifies.

You can teach your dog not to go near that area, either with a shock collar, dog repellant spray, or just basic hands-on training.
If you do want your dog to go on there, make sure he/she is never there without your supervision or without a leash or something.
The dog should be trained to not jump onto the sofa and other furnitures without permission from you, that way it'll jump up slowly and there will be a lesser chance of it falling off.
You can put something at the bottom of the stairs just in case, another larger sofa, or a trampoline or something?
If you don't want to then just teach your dog behavioral skills.
Good luck!

I agree with you that you need something as that sounds dangerous, but can't even visualise what you mean to suggest something.
Do train him not to go on the sofa anyway, and usually if brought up from pups they will stay off of it. So whatever you do put up you could remove later.
You can get gates with extention pieces to cover larger gaps, would that be suitable.
Add on - shucks, your description makes me shudder as I hate heights.
Can see your dilemna.
I wonder if you could get a large sheet of plywood type of thing and put it behind the sofa and against the railing so that if he got onto the sofa he would have to jump up over a wooden "wall" to go over the top. Not very pretty but might work.

a panel of plastic lattice slide bottom tween sofa & rail and top is still likely to be high enough? or they sell nets for balconies to keep small children from similar mistakes If there is attachment points.

they make baby gates that attach to stair spindles to keep tots from going up and down, would something like that help you?
