Yes, certain types of air purifiers remove all types of smoke, including cigarette smoke, smoke from burning or cooking.
You may check the comparison chart on http://www.air-cleaner-systems.com/compare-air-cle... to see which purifying technology is best for you to remove viruses, dust, smoke, odor or anything else.
The best ones to fight some and odor at the same time, are ozone purifiers. If you put it on max, it will clear the air really fast, but make sure to air the room after you use it. The ozone emitted by the machine can be irritating for your throat and cause other problems. When used on min, though, they are safe.

Certain types of air purifiers are for smoke and odors, like the Sun Pure SP-20C (same as Continental Fan CX1000 but at a better price) at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portabl... The photocatalyst is able to remove odors and gases like carbon monoxide, smoke and benzene. This is a top of the line air purifier and will be the last one you will need to buy, since it comes with a lifetime warranty. Lots of information on the site and a number to call if you have questions.

They'll catch some of it, but if you've got a lot of oily smoke in the air you might have to replace the filter. Call the manufacturer's service number--it should be in the manual, or you could find it online.
If you've got smoke... that's gone beyond 'cooking' and into 'burning.' My sympathies.

I'd go along with the previous answer but I'd also take sister to a doctor to see if there is a reason she smells things so strongly. Most likely your sister has a simple problem with her sinus's but why have her suffer when a nice ENT might be able to make it easier for her to deal with?
