I live in Syracuse, NY and would like to go to college at John Jay any suggestion on affordable places to live down in Manhattan?

John Jay has a housing office, which can help you identify sources:

They list some private student residence halls that students from any university can use. Those might be a really good option for your first term or so at the college, as you get to know the city, and learn which neighborhoods are less expensive and yet not too bad, and yet are easy to get to the school via the train, etc.
Compared to Syracuse, you are going to find the prices in NYC re: housing to be jaw-dropping, so be prepared. Most students share an apartment with other students, to cut costs.
