sikhs aren't supposed to be sexist, but it is a personal choice that only the person can change. sikhs are not a brake off of hinduism just to clarify to the person who said that, we don't care about skin tone, again that is just a personal thing. once you accept being a sikh you let go of your race, creed and caste. sikhi is about equality to everyone and everything, sri guru nanak dev ji, the first sikh guru had 3 basic rules, remember god with every breath, live honestly, and treat everyone and everything equally. even today those who are loyal to sri guru granth sahib ji, the final sikh guru, follow these rules, we're not allowed to judge, or think we're better than anyone or anything, that again is a personal choice. and how dense can you be, we've been telling everyone time and time again, that we are our own religion but there is always a smartass that pops out of no where repeating the things we say no to.

Hindus certainly have no particular love for women. Before widdows were expected to join their husbands on his funeral-pyre.

Even in relatively modern time (1950s+) it wasn't unusual for small children (toddlers) to be wed (it was more engaged, as it wasn't consumated until they matued). If however the groom died, the "widdow" (often still a child) was expected to live-out her whole life in special widdow-housed with other widdows. After all, the marriage hadn't been consumated, so she couldn't remarry.

Traditionally, the brides family had to pay a rather stiff dowery. That's one of the reason why it became a tradition to kill infant girls (In Islam Muhammed address and specifically condemn this practice, nut not so in Hindu). Still many girls are killed right after birth, as raising a girl and getting her married is nothing but expenditures. Dowery has been outlawed, but the groom's family still expect "gifts" -- often expenisve gifts. There are many cases in todays India were the in-laws (often mother-in-law) has set fire to her daughter-in-law, often because such "gifts" have been deemed unsatisfactory.

Of course, much of this was rooted out by the British, been out-lawed, or gone out of practice as modern democracy replaces religion... But even if people don't (or can't) follow these parts of the religion, it's still part of the religion. (Just as even though Christians don't stone disobedient children or kill homosexuals, it's still in the Bible.)

I would also recomend reading this (old!) book about Hindu Law

    http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21918/21918-h/21918...

One thing to notice, is that women are often judged harder than men.

I don't know much about Sikhs, except that the men *always* weares turbans -- often also to bed. As a minority, there has been some friction, and some fight for independance and rights. Sikhs have also been behind some terroist attacks in this struggle, among them the bombing of (I think) Silk Air in the mid 1980s (1985 I think) -- which long was the worst terrorist attack in civil aviation.

the sikh people have a lot of problems, due to the british analysing the religion and sikh society and influencing anti sikh agenda with in the sikh people.

e.g the british encourage sexism, casteism, and alcoholism during the british raj of india, in order to destroy the sikh people and bring them into christianity.

even though hinduism does actually believe in casteism- it is infact the sikhs who are having more caste related problems, despite the sikhs religion rejecting casteism.

the sikh youth are seeking to rectify all errors and interventions which have changed the sikh religion by anti sikh groups,

Firstly, what Koppe74 has mentioned only happend 50+ years ago. Considering India just got its Independance in the last 50 years, it was considered a 3rd world/developing nation (and it still is). Hindus may have surpressed women and their rights, but which religion hasn't? Even today, women arn't given equal rights in all parts of the world.

Most of everything he talked about (widow burning, child engagment) happend mostly in VILLAGES of India, where everyone was illiterate and uneducated.

He talks about it in a negative light, which angers me, because though it may be true (a hundred years back), it was never considered a "norm" of Indian society. A few Hindu extremists regulated these laws, and as always, the majority always fought against them (without any success).

Not to mention, pretty much every religion has unsual practices which were performed back in the day, it does not reflect that religions standings as of NOW. Keep in mind, Christianity back int he day also conformed to some odd and wierd practices (it may not be widow-burning, but I am sure it is something just as wrong and odd).

To answer your question, Hindus and Sikhs get along great. Sikhs were orginially Hindu. But they branched off later, and started to follow their own religion (Sikhism). Language differs slightly, but if you can understand Hindi than it is not hard to understand Punjabi (the language of the Sikhs). They are pretty much 85% similar, with minor differences, for example, Sikh men wear Turbans, and the Sikh people may be slightly more religious than the Hindus.

FYI, arranged marriages were very common in our (Hindu) religion a while back. As society progressed, arranged marriages faded away. Although it still exists today in parts of India (mainly villages), it is important to note that arranged marriage does not necessarily mean "forced marriage". It may very well refer to an instance where the parents seek a mate for their daughter/son (in the event that the daughter/son has no significant other, and gives permission to their parent to find a nice bride/groom), and if the daughter/son AGREES to marry the saught person, then they get married. Marriage happens with the consent of both parties. So, not all arranged marriages are forced. Parents basically set up the son/daughter with the person of the opposite sex, and hopes they will like each other (if not, then they dont get married).

As for whether Hindus and Sikhs are sexist...I don't know what to tell you here, because to some extent they are, but that is ONLY because of their culture. In our culture, men are regarded as the head of the household and are supposed to provide for their families. Women are normally seen as housewives that provides for her family as well. Atlhought this is the very traditional view, times in India have changed. We no longer believe men are the head of the household. Men and women are given equal opportunities, and they both may seek employment, and raise a family together. Keep in mind, back in the day, pretty much every religion/culture considered men somewhat superior to women. Times have changed my friend.

No problems. In fact the Sikhs were originally from the Hindu faith and they just broke away to follow a new belief system that is "Sikhism".
