What's a good letter of explanation for late payments - real estate?

What's a good letter of explanation for being late on student loan payments, in regard to getting pre-approved for a home loan, other than I was flat broke and had no money.

    There is no reason that I ever accepted as an undewriter and I cannot even once, remember requesting it.

    I was facing financial hardship after I graduated and the became behind due to lack of funds. However, with my current position I have paid all the outstanding balances so they are to date I do not foresee future issues with late payments.

    Tell them the truth and tell them why it won't happen again, it's what underwriters want to see.
