Why is NASCAR a sport?

I don't ask this in a sarcastic way. I'm wondering what makes NASCAR qualified as a sport? I don't know much about it, all I know is they are modified cars that race on a track.

I've noticed it has gotten a lot popular over the past decade in terms of media, it's always on ESPN2 now.

Update:

What's with all the hate? I clarified I didn't know much about it and wasn't being sarcastic ... thanks to the 1-2 people who gave me an actual answer!

It can be classified as a sport because there are tons of fans who come and cheer on their favorite drivers and favorite driver teams every weekend (sometimes races skip a weekend though, but not often). The drivers compete individually, but as a team at the same time. They have a coach (the crew chief) they practice, they have to qualify, and they have to have a strategy/game plan to do their best at the race. They can qualify to compete in the championship (In NASCAR's case, the Sprint Cup) They can win, and they can loose. It's a sport, and when you break down a-n-y sport, those are the common themes you will see.

Well I could explain it all but to make it simple, racing is a sport and NASCAR is racing so guess what, it's a sport. Want proof here's a link of "sport" and look at the 1st definition, it list "racing" as the 1st example. The 1st definition is "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc." and here's the link http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sport

It's a motorsport. I used to wonder why playing with a ball was a sport.

Because they gphave to endure the equal forces physically that football players do, And probably more mentally.
