Replacing a 1972 Honda CB450 clutch?
My Dad has bestowed upon me a 1972 Honda CB450 (obviously) with a few problems.
A: It needs a new clutch.
B: It's been sitting since 1992.
C: It was last tagged in 1986.
The last two issues I can deal with seperately. It's the first one that I'm lost on. When he says "You need to replace the clutch." Does he mean "clutch PLATES"? Is a clutch and clutch plates the same thing? I can take it to my brother to do the work, I just need to know what to buy.

There are two different types of plates in any wet clutch, which that Honda has, one is called the friction plate the other is a metal plate.
The friction plates are usually the first to go bad, but if overheated the metal plates can get scummy and can warp.
If your bro knows what he's doing, it's a fairly easy job, if not it's not! Have him at least pull the clutch assembly out and inspect it. There are no special tools needed for that task other than the basic metric tool set.
Hopefully your dad was wise enough to buy a Shop Manual with the MC, if not I recommend that you are wiser and obtain one.

I think he means you need to replace the clutch plates and also if necessary the steel plates.
I do not know if you can take this to your brother. It depends on his skill level according to repairs on bikes.
What you will need is the gasket and the clutch plates. If you need to replace the steel plates you will see when all is disassembled. And the assembling has to be done in the correct way. It is not only to put it back and think all will be good.
